BIG BAND BASH 2003 Thomson Swing Band |
The Thomson Swing Band is the second band of the Thomson Jazz Club.
Conducted by David Humphreys, they also played a variety of Latin tunes although it is a swing band. Accompanied by saxophonist-turned-vocalist Gerry, they played songs like "Just a Gigolo", "Beautiful Maria of My Soul" and "It Had to Be You". |
If you can only have one band to dance to, this must be the band. |
Not just for Jitterbugs Swingapore but all Lindy Hoppers in Singapore. Their name says it all. True to their name, they invited all Lindy Hoppers to join them on stage. |
The band plays once a fortnight at Harry's Bar (Boat Quay) on a Monday accompanied by Lindy Hoppers from Singapore and all over the world. Designated as a swing band, it is the band with the closest working relationship with the Jitterbugs Swingapore. The school danced with the band during the last Singapore International Jazz Festival in May 2001. The band also appeared at the Glitterbug Ball during the SEA Jam Swingapore 2002, a Lindy Hop camp, as well as the Harry's Bar in the recent dance documentary "Go Tutu Go!: Lindy Hop" by Arts Central which featured the Jitterbugs Swingapore. And when Fen, the co-founder of Jitterbugs Swingapore, needed a band for her wedding, who do you think she invited? Thus it may be regarded as the de facto band for Jitterbugs as well as Lindy Hoppers from all over the island. |
In the grand finale, the band played "Sing, Sing, Sing" featuring Japanese drummer Yuji Akaho.
This is often regarded as the mad song of the Lindy Hoppers. As expected, the audience was treated to a spectacular display of sophisticated moves when the husband and wife team (Chan Meng and Sing) appeared on stage. |

It was getting late and the sun had set. We had finally come to the last band and probably the best big band in Singapore - the Thomson Big Band. © Copyright May 2003 Anthony Chia Chwee Kiong |
