ay Out at Esplanade - Daytime JamWynton Marsalis
Believe it or not, this is not the moment that everyone was waiting for. Why? According to official sources, Wynton would not be appearing for the Daytime Jam although he would be persuaded to. So his appearance was a pleasant surprise. Or is this merely a ploy to give the audience a big surprise? Whatever it may be, the audience was certainly glad that Wynton did come after all. |
In a style that is uncharacteristic of a world famous celebrity, instead of being introduced by the compere with great pomp and grandeur, Wynton chose to creep in quietly from the back of the stage while the band was playing and just when no one was noticing. I believe many were asking "Don't tell me this is ..?" as they saw this familiar face creeping in quietly from the back of the stage. |
Like myself, they obviously refused to believe their eyes or their judgement until David Humphreys interrupted to introduce the young man to the crowd. |

Throughout the one-hour, the band played tunes like: C Jam Blues Black and Tan Fantasy Rumpus in Richmond Rockin' in Rhythm Main Stem Portrait of Louis Armstrong |
Most of these were featured in the PBS broadcast "Live in Swing City". And of course the familiar favourites of Benny Goodmen and the other swing/big band legends that you always hear at the Harry’s Bar. And do I need to tell you that the LCJO members are superb? Go and hear them for yourself! With all the brilliant brass sounds, spectacular aerials and smooth swings, your weekend certainly don’t mean a thing if you ain't got that swing! |
