CHIJMES 7TH ANNUAL JAZZ FESTIVAL - CHIJAZZ 2002

While Chijmes has been holding this free jazz festival for several years, this year's event is different in many ways. Firstly, it was not held on the third Sunday of October unlike before. Besides, long before the concert started, `kiasu' locals had already filled the lawn. This is incredible given that about 1,600 are preparing to hear Wynton Marsalis and his Lincoln Centre Jazz Orchestra at the Esplanade that night. This year's concert was also different in that the organisers had laid the entire lawn with canvass sheets for the audience to sit on. Unlike most concerts, the event's compere was in fact a jazz saxophonist, Otrie Barret, who also entertained the crowd while the next band prepared for their set.

Last but not least, the organiser had brought in an outstanding foreign artiste and band, and also continued with a concert the following day.
